Physiotherapists and Chiropractors: A Comparison

Physiotherapists

Certified physiotherapists undertake a specific two year training program at the Master's level of University, must pass an physiotherapy licensing examination and register with the appropriate physiotherapy board.

While there are many types of physiotherapists, the underlying basics for all are therapeutic exercise and functional training.    Physiotherapists treat patients for musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurological conditions.

Physiotherapists initially complete a comprehensive evaluation to diagnose and treat patients.    The belief is education is a vital component to treatment.     Patients are trained in body mechanics, posture and activity modification.

Physiotherapist use physical methods, modes and education for pain reduction and increased functional ability.   Physical methods may include therapeutic exercise,  manual therapy and functional training.   Modes may be heat, cold and electrotherapy.    The objective of these approaches is reduced pain, swelling and muscles spasms and increased strength, range of motion, wound healing and functional independent.

The trademarks of physiotherapy are active and resistance exercises, range of motion and isometric exercise, and prevention programs.

Chiropractors

Chiropractors are conservative health care providers focusing on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal system disorders and, in particular, the spine.   Chiropractors must complete a five year university Master of Chiropractor degree.   Studies conducted in the United States, Sweden and New Zealand have revealed a chiropractor receives the equivalent education to that of medicine in basic sciences.    Chiropractic education focuses on anatomy, physiology, pathology, neurology, biomechanics, x-rays, spinal adjustment techniques and healthier lifestyles without the necessity for medications or surgery.

After graduation, chiropractors attend professional development courses and seminars to remain up to date with scientific research.

A chiropractic board is responsible for regulating chiropractic standards.   There are approximately 4,500 chiropractors practicing in Australia.  Chiropractic was founded in the 1890's by D.D. Palmer and has constantly evolved since that time to the expertise found today.

The principle that spinal misalignment causes neurological conditions and lowers resistance to many health conditions is the basis of chiropractic medicine.

A chiropractor reviews the patient's history, performs physical, neurological and orthopedic examinations and evaluate posture.    He or she may order x-rays to assist with the diagnosis.

While spinal manipulations are the foundation of a chiropractor's treatment, alternative therapies such as ice, heat, massage, ultrasound and acupuncture are often employed.     Hand held devices may be used to manually adjust the spine.

If a chiropractor discovers spinal manipulation is not appropriate, such as for rheumatoid arthritis, he or she will not proceed with manipulation and may refer the patient to another health care professional.

A chiropractor has a holistic approach to health care.    Appropriate stretching or strengthening exercises are taught to the patient, along with advice given on nutrition, stress management, heredity and lifestyle changes.    Chiropractic is a natural treatment, without medications or surgery, that promotes the body's recuperative abilities.

Besides general practice, chiropractors specialize in sports injuries, neurology and orthopedics.

Most private health insurance plans cover the cost of chiropractic care.
