Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy

There are many benefits to chiropractic care during pregnancy.  Seeing a chiropractor can give a woman the ability to maintain a healthier pregnancy and more women are beginning to seek chiropractic care throughout their pregnancies.

In some cases, other health care providers are referring their pregnant patients to a chiropractor to optimize the health of the mother and unborn child.  Pregnant women are less inclined to turn to medications and other remedies that could adversely affect the health of their baby and instead turn to holistic therapy which can be found in chiropractic care.  When pregnant women determine which holistic therapy to choose from, chiropractic care for pregnancy is one of the most popular.

Some pregnant women choose to see a chiropractor in order to restore balance in the pelvic area.  A pelvis that is misaligned can cause the baby to be shifted in a position that makes delivery very difficult.  Chiropractic care can prevent a potential cesarean section by making sure that the pelvis is aligned in a way that allows the woman to naturally give birth.

The founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association developed a specific chiropractic adjustment that allows chiropractors to establish stability and balance in the pelvis.  Restoring pelvic balance decreases the amount of stress placed on the uterus.  The adjustment is called the Webster Technique and is specifically created to turn breeched babies naturally.  When the baby is delivered naturally, labor is less difficult and delivery is safer for both the mother and child.

Why Pregnant Women are Choosing Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractors Understand Hormonal Changes - When a woman is pregnant her body undergoes many changes.  Some of the changes are external, but most of them are internal.  When the internal changes result in a misaligned joint or spine, a woman should seek chiropractic care.

There are millions of different hormonal changes that take place in pregnant woman.  A chiropractor can recognize when a pregnancy is being adversely effected by changes to the nervous system and can work to correct undue pressure.

Discomforts of Pregnancy Can be Solved by Chiropractic Care - Some women suffer from various discomforts during their pregnancy.  Some of these discomforts could include swelling, fatigue, and pain.  Chiropractors can help pregnant women organize exercise regimes and work-outs that are safe to use during pregnancy.  For this reason, chiropractic care is continuing to grow among pregnant women.

One of the most common symptoms of pregnancy is nausea.  Nausea is more likely to be experienced during the first trimester of pregnancy.  A chiropractor can help control the symptoms of nausea experienced by pregnant women.  Other symptoms that can be reduced by a chiropractor include neck pain, back pain, and joint aches.

Back Pain - According to a study by the Jarkata Post, seventy percent of back pain during pregancy is directly related to musculoskeletal changes.  When a woman is pregant, her uterus grows.  This growth places increased pressure on the back muscles.  The mother's center of gravity is shifted and constant back pain can occur.  A chiropractor is equipped to help a pregant mother with this issue.

Concern about Breech Birth - Women who are concerned about the possibility of a breech birth or pelvic imbalance have the option of seeing a chiropractor for pregnancy.  The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics confirms that chiropractic care has a success rate of over 80% when it comes to turning a breech baby.

Chiropractors have the necessary skills to work effectively with pregnant women.  A trained chiropractor knows how to properly make adjustments on a woman's body while avoiding any pressure on the abdomen.  Many pregnant women avoid chiropractic care during their pregnancy because of fear that it may cause complications.  Chiropractor care can solve pregnancy complications and is perfectly safe for both the mother and fetus.

Chiropractors work with pregnant women to make sure there is a smooth transition for the baby into the world. Many chiropractors find that working with pregnant women is very fulfilling and rewarding.  One of the most beneficial things that a chiropractor can do for a pregnant woman is to educate her on various therapeutic stretches and exercises that can allow the spinal muscles to stay strong, and balanced.

The care during pregnancy can extend even after the patient gives birth.  Many patients who receive care during their pregnancy choose to continue postpartum care after their pregnancy.
