Chiropractic Care and Stress

Stress can contribute to a broad range of mental and physical illnesses and it is important that people find ways to manage their stress effectively.  Most people experience first-hand how stress can affect a person's quality of life and cause internal an external problems.

There are many things that can contribute to stress but the two most noted causes are work and financial problems.  Stress is not only provoked by negative experiences.  Many positive experiences such as marriage or pregnancy can also provoke stress.

Stress becomes a problem when it affects an individual chronically and begins to suppress the immune system and begin to interfere with the central nervous system.  A study conducted by Cornell University in New York revealed that children who experience chronic stress have brains that cognitively develop differently than children with low stress childhoods.  Some people are more resilient to stressful situations than others, but stress can affect anyone.

Chiropractic care does two things when it comes to stress: It helps the individual manage stress and it treats nervous system problems that are rooted in stress.

Stress is not something that a doctor can conquer for the patient.  The patient must also play an active role in stress management in order for any method to be effective.  Chiropractic care emphasizes a collaborative role in stress management and encourages the patient to play an active role in the healing process.

The chiropractor's role in stress management is to balance the nervous system.  In order to balance the nervous system a chiropractor will work with the spinal column which houses the nervous system.  The nerves in the body extend from the spinal column and when the column is not in correct alignment, normal biological activity is hindered.

One way that stress interferes with the spinal column is it creates additional pressure on the body causing the body to wear out and increase in fragility.  For this reason, a large percentage of illnesses that people suffer with are stress related.

Another way that stress interferes with the body is by causing muscle tension.  Chiropractic manipulation can reduce muscle tension and increase range of motion, allowing the body to flow more freely.  For years, chiropractors have studied how mental and emotional stress can cause muscle tension and other disorders that lead to pain and tension.

Chiropractors can offer patients adjustments to relieve tension and pain.  When muscular tension is relieved, a patient experiences better blood circulation which contributes to the overall health of the patient.

Chiropractors and Dealing with Stress

Some of the most common symptoms of stress that many chiropractors see involve headaches, fatigue, and pain in the neck and back.  If left untreated unhealthy stress could cause more serious problems in the body like high blood pressure, ulcers, and disrupted sleeping patterns.  Millions of people are unaware of how stress can be directly tied to these symptoms but can become educated about the correlation through chiropractic care.

A chiropractor can teach a patient various relaxation techniques and even exercises to reduce the toll stress takes on the body.  Proper diet and nutrition or key to stress management as well.

Chiropractors who deal with stress management aim to heal and revitalize the body to a healthier state of being.  For years chiropractic offices have treated patients who suffer from various problems due to chronic stress.  When the body isn't processing stress in a efficient manner it suffers consequences later.  Chiropractic care is one way to help the body process stress better.

The Journal of Clinical Oncology published a study in April 2009 that discovered that stress management can improve a person's mood and quality of life.  Those who encountered stress management had a better chance of feeling upbeat and living a more fulfilling life.   Reducing stress is good for maintaing health and balance in the life.
