Chiropractic Care and Scoliosis

Scoliosis can be a serious matter when it is not detected early by a chiropractor.  When individuals are able to successfully detect scoliosis early, they may often get the proper treatment needed to reduce the curvature in the back.  Most people have a slight curve in their back that is not a cause for alarm.

These curves are not scoliosis and are normally not detectable to an untrained eye.  A curve doesn't mean that a person has scoliosis unless it is a progressive curve that is growing.  In order for a chiropractor to determine if an individual has scoliosis a full physical examination is required.  The examination will include a postural analysis that can be used to detect scoliosis.

If scoliosis is detected the next step is to determine the magnitude and location of the scoliosis.  It is also imperative that the chiropractor know if there is an underlying illness that is causing scoliosis.

How Do you Know if you Have Scoliosis

There are signs present in those who have scoliosis.  One sign of scoliosis would be shoulders that are not of equal height.  Hips may also appear to be unequal in height.  Other symptoms include pain and disfunction with the lungs or heart.  A person with scoliosis can have their quality of life affected.

In the educational system, some schools take it upon themselves to routinely screen students for scoliosis.  The reason scoliosis is screened in students is because it is important that it's diagnosed early.  When scoliosis is treated as soon as possible there may be fewer health consequences.

A chiropractor can confirm whether scoliosis is present.  Almost two thirds of the patients who seek chiropractic treatment for their scoliosis report success.  Chiropractic care may have have very good results with certain types of scoliosis ref.  Many chiropractors are caring and dedicated professionals who want their patients to have the best health possible.

In some cases the medical community only deals with spinal curves that are more than twenty degrees, but chiropractic deals with all levels of scoliosis.  Individuals with a slight variance of scoliosis may find help through chiropractic management.

Who Gets Scoliosis?

Anyone can be affected by scoliosis.  According to the World Health Organization millions of people are effected by scoliosis.  Scoliosis can start at any age but most people develop scoliosis during childhood.  Scoliosis does not discriminate and it affects all types of people.  Research suggests that girls are more affected by scoliosis than boys.

A family history of scoliosis can increase an individual's chance of having scoliosis.  Scoliosis can be inherited and if a child's parents are affected, then it is imperative that the child is screened for scoliosis.  In nearly 80% of scoliosis cases, medical doctors and chiropractors are not able to pinpoint one main cause of scoliosis.  In the other 20% of cases different medical issues such as tumors, trauma, or neurological disease are found to cause the scoliosis.  Still, there are some cases where scoliosis is caused by leg-length inequality or some type of postural problem.

Patients who are treated by a chiropractor for scoliosis often find that their healing varies.  Healing could take as little as six months.  Often the patient will come in for weekly treatments and the chiropractor will chart the progress that is taking place.  Using the chiropractic approach stabilizes the spine and prevents the scoliosis curves from progressing.

A chiropractor can give the best advice and sleeping posture tips to manage scoliosis and begin restoration of the back.  Seeing a chiropractor for scoliosis can be significantly less expensive than seeing a medical doctor and surgeon.

One normal treatment that is used by the general practitioner is a brace for scoliosis.  The scoliosis brace is a very uncomfortable and rigid contraction that must be worn by the patient almost the entire day.  Unfortunately, little is done for the correction and marginalization of the scoliosis when the brace is worn.

Patients of a medical doctor who don't want to wear the scoliosis brace can opt for surgery.  Orthopedic surgeons are capable of performing a Spinal Fusion surgery.  During the surgery metal rods are placed on each side of the spine and the curves are manually reduced as much as possible.  An individual who turns to surgery for scoliosis must be aware that surgery is dangerous and it can alter the person's way to life forever.

Although surgery is very successful with eliminating scoliosis it should be a last resort.  Chiropractic care for scoliosis should always be the first resort.  People with scoliosis can lead happy and productive lives.
