Chiropractic Care and PMS

Each month, millions of women suffer from PMS symptoms.  PMS is an acronym that stands for premenstrual syndrome and effects millions of women world-wide.  Unfortunately, most of the women who suffer rarely ever think of how chiropractic care can impact their PMS symptoms.

Women who deal with PMS on a monthly basis can sometimes grow accustomed to the pain and discomfort and begin to accept it as a natural part of their lives. The stress of pain and discomfort doesn't have to be a normal part of a woman's life and there are multiple treatment options available for PMS sufferers.

Women who suffer from PMS have often questioned whether or not a chiropractor can successfully help them eliminate the symptoms of PMS.  Women who suffer from PMS deal with bloating, pain, nausea, headaches and a range of other symptoms that can impair a woman's ability to think and function at her peak.  Fortunately, chiropractors can help PMS sufferers ref

Premenstrual syndrome is not only female disorder that chiropractors have the ability to help.  Women who suffer from menopause are also seeking out chiropractic care to relieve their pain and symptoms. ref

Women who suffer from PMS normally feel the symptoms 7-10 days before their period.  Studies suggest that women who experience PMS are more likely to show signs of having problems with the spine than those who do not.

Many of the women that have these spinal abnormalities show evidence of problems with the lumbar nerves that support the uterus and ovaries.  When certain lumbar nerves are irritated, the pain and discomfort is felt in a woman's reproductive organs.  Problems with the lumbar nerves can spill over into the other medical problems such as incontinence, sexual dysfunctions, and in some cases infertility.

A chiropractor may restore the proper function of the lumbar nerves so that the body works the way that it should.  Currently, almost 50% of the women who suffer from PMS take over-the-counter medication in order to alleviate symptoms.  Seeing a chiropractor may reduce the reliance that many women have on medication.

How Do I know if I have PMS?

There are various symptoms from PMS.  The most noticeable symptom to the woman are symptoms that produces cramping, bloating, disfunction with the bowels, and appetite changes.  Symptoms that are noticeable to others are behavioral changes that are often attributed to chemical imbalances.  PMS can bring about anxiety, mood swings, depression, irritability and fatigue.

Other symptoms can include swelling, back pain, headaches, skin eruptions, and even tenderness around the breast.  Elevated hormone levels have been considered one of the underlying causes of PMS.  In cases where cramping, abdominal pain, or backaches are a recurring symptom of PMS, patients are often encouraged to seek chiropractic care.

Because the nerves associated with the spine can effect multiple parts of the body (including female sexual organs) chiropractors may be of assistance with PMS and menopause issues.  There is a misconception that chiropractors only deal with neck and back pain, but chiropractic care actually offers a range of benefits to many disorders including PMS.

Menopause symptoms such as joint pain, hot flashes, and headaches may be reduced with proper chiropractic care.

The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation conducted a study in which the chiropractic approach to PMS was observed.  The study was conducted on eleven women who all suffered with PMS.  The women received chiropractic spinal adjustments and questionnaires to track their progress in the effectiveness of the adjustments.  According to the questionnaires, all twelve women reported improvement in mood swings, sexual drive, mental ability, and had a decrease of the physical symptoms related to pain.

Will Chiropractic Care Cure PMS?

There is no cure for PMS.  The good news is that with good chiropractic care, a healthy diet, and proper exercise the symptoms of PMS can be greatly or completely eliminated.  For years, millions of women have relied on various pain relief medications to cover the symptoms related to PMS, but chiropractic care offers a healthy and safe alternative for women who no longer want to medicate but want to rely on a more natural form of healing to relieve the symptoms.
